Silk is a natural protein fibre, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from cocoons of silkworms. Silk is the strongest of natural fibres. It is breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, absorbs moisture, reduces humidity, is surprisingly cool in the summer, and remarkably warm in the winter. Silk retains its shape, drapes and forms well, and has an unmistakable sheen and feel. The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibres' triangular prism-like structure, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles. Silk is naturally fire-retardant, making it a very safe material for children. CARING FOR SILK Silk will wear with time, but always retains its special movement and feel, always staying valuable. The better you care for it, the better it looks today and every day. It is forgiving and kind. You may wash most of your silks on DELICATE in your washer, and LOW in your dryer. A mild detergent is preferred, and Wash on Cool. You can also hang them to dry. A quick tumble in the dryer will release wrinkle. If you have items that have lots of straps or could get twisted, we recommend a zippered laundry bag. You may STEAM IRON for any remaining wrinkles or for a fresh pressed look! About caring for Rainbows – A Special Note For more information on silk: |
